The S Gurumurthy Chat

ravi rao (Fri Aug 15 1997 9:20 IST)
Saab: Banwarilal Purohit has made serious allegations against Pramod Mahajan. Instead of asking the party general secretary to step down, why has the BJP tried to hush up the entire issue by lying that the MP has apologised to Mahajan?

S Gurumurthy (Fri Aug 15 1997 9:24 IST)
Ravi Rao: I have not really studied the allegation in depth. The crux of the allegation that no mining should be done within 25 km of the defence factory was violated by the Western India Coalfields for decades. Mr Mahajan is not responsible for it. Nor is he responsible for the grant of captive mines to the Mittals.

jagu (Fri Aug 15 1997 9:19 IST)
Is not the strength of the RSS mainly due to the reactionary tendencies of many middle class Hindus against minority appeasement followed by major political parties in India? Don't you think that any organisation which contains reactionary elements cannot last for long?

S Gurumurthy (Fri Aug 15 1997 9:25 IST)
Jagu: I agree with you. If the RSS is reactionary it will die. But from 1925 it is growing means that it is not reactionary. This is on your own logic.

S Gurumurthy (Fri Aug 15 1997 9:28 IST)
Ramana Murthy: Swadeshi is an alternative global thought which emphaisises greater intra-national and then intra-regional trade and as a residue global trade. This is now evolving as a powerful thought in the West from the family, community, national and environmental points of view. I think in the next decade globalisation will become the residue instead of being the driving force.

sanjay (Fri Aug 15 1997 9:21 IST)
Gurumurthy ji, Hardly a day passes by without hearing a bad news from India. In such an era of gloom, how come you guys are still optimistic. Tell us the secret that can cheer us all.

S Gurumurthy (Fri Aug 15 1997 9:31 IST)
Sanjay: You must understand that newspapers publish news that a man has bitten dogs. So what is an exception is what is published. That 950 million people are living in peace and in spite of all problems and differences are carrying on as a society cannot interest as news. That some 25 people are doing wrong in different parts of the country which is one seventh of humanity is nothing. Being part of the press I feel a little shy about the image that the press is giving about India.

prasan (Fri Aug 15 1997 9:29 IST)
If the basis for Partition was religion, why couldn't we make one Hindu Rashtra and one Islamic? Who was responsible? Many say Gandhi. YOUR COMMENTS?

S Gurumurthy (Fri Aug 15 1997 9:34 IST)
Prasan: What you suggest is precisely what Gandhiji tried and the result is Partititon. So your proposition has been rejected by history. We need to try a more practical alternative, that is what the RSS is attempting.

Barathian (Fri Aug 15 1997 9:34 IST)
Guruji: Do think that after 10 years INDIA will be there as today for RSS ruling

S Gurumurthy (Fri Aug 15 1997 9:36 IST)
Bharatian: The RSS has no idea of ruling the country. If it were, I will not be in the RSS. It exists to correct the course of the nation by changing the mindset of the people. By changing the ruler, this cannot be achieved.

new common man (Fri Aug 15 1997 9:25 IST)
Mr. SG: I think your argument for not arresting Babri Masjid demolishers is flawed. Consider this: Assume that my family and my neighbour's have had feuds much before the British came. They have been hurting my ancestors for a long time. Next year, after BJP comes to power, I destroy their house. And your government will not arrest me, becos' my "anger" is historical ! MY POINT: A CRIME IS A CRIME IS A CRIME IS A CRIME.

S Gurumurthy (Fri Aug 15 1997 9:39 IST)
New CM: To some other question I answered that if one goes to Kashi or Mathura the offence would be of the Muslims. It would need correction not by punishing those perpetrated, this is precisely what happened. In Ayodhya that is correcting without punishing any one, the parallel is the Russian cathedral in Warsaw.

Sanjeev Kumar (Fri Aug 15 1997 9:38 IST)
Mr Gurumurthy> Do you think India must adopt Hinduism as its official relegion, just as Christianity is in USA.

S Gurumurthy (Fri Aug 15 1997 9:43 IST)
Sanjeev: Your suggestion is amusing. The Hindu religion says that all religions are true including Islam and Christianity. While the latter two religions clearly rule out every other religion. Therefore to compare Hinduism with Islam and Christianity is fundatamentally wrong. And yet if you see Hindu history except Asoka no one declared a state religion. Because wwhen you have 33 crore gods which god will you declare as the official god?

Ramana Murthy (Fri Aug 15 1997 9:41 IST)
Gurumurthy ji, when will India reach its "pinnacle of glory" and what role the average Hindu will play in accomplishing this noble goal?

S Gurumurthy (Fri Aug 15 1997 9:45 IST)
Ramana Murthy: India is an honourable country and Hindus are good people, but nothing more. This world respects strength and not noble simplicity. Therefore, when India becomes strong its nobility will be respected. That will be its glory.

prasan (Fri Aug 15 1997 9:38 IST)
DESPITE BEEING A SECULAR, I SAY ONE THING, MOST (NOT ALL OF COURSE) OF THE MUSLIMS RESIDING IN INDIA HAVE HAD SOFT CORNER FOR PAKISTAN WHICH THEY SHOW TIME BY TIME. WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS ?

S Gurumurthy (Fri Aug 15 1997 9:48 IST)
Prasan: The vote-hungry Hindu leadership which treated Muslims as mere ballot papers is responsible for this.

baba (Fri Aug 15 1997 9:46 IST)
It will be gross injustice to say that only Muslim rulers in the past were oppressive/unjust/fanatics etc etc. What did the Hindu Thakurs/ jamindars/ village sarpanches do in the past? Why do we know Phoolan Devi today? Why are all the Hindi films today based on subjects like Jamindars e g Mrityudand, Karan Arjun etc. The only thing our Jamindars/Thakurs did not do is convert religion. But people on one hand blame past Muslim rulers and the same people give votes to the idiot Jamindars/Thakurs in elections and also stand by them all the time.

S Gurumurthy (Fri Aug 15 1997 9:52 IST)
Baba: I agree with you. There are many intra-Hindu problems. The Hindus have been more unjust to the fellow Hindus and have been over generous to non Hindus. Therefore, they weakened internally and externally.

cj (Fri Aug 15 1997 9:46 IST)
Mr. SG, if a country wants to declare a religion as an official religion, then there is no need to declare which "God" is the official God ? What about Israel ? they don't even believe in idol worship but Judaism is their official religion. Please explain.

S Gurumurthy (Fri Aug 15 1997 9:56 IST)
CJ: The religions of books have no god. Therefore, the book and the prophet alone rule. Hinduism has no book, it has no prophet. And so it cannot declare an official book or prophet. And it has too many idols -- 33 crore -- to select from. That is why I said that there is a thelogical difference between the Abrahamic faiths and Hinduism..

Barathian (Fri Aug 15 1997 9:43 IST)
Guruji : Does the RSS have a plan to lead India by killing M-indians and uniting Hindians

S Gurumurthy (Fri Aug 15 1997 9:58 IST)
Bharatian: for a person like you I would prefer a personal session. Because your questioning proceeds on the premise that the RSS eats Muslims for breakfast.

S Gurumurthy (Fri Aug 15 1997 9:59 IST)
Dear friends I throughly enjoyed my chat session with you all and hope to be back with you. Till then bye.
