Sensex surges up 65 points, crosses 4200 mark

The uptrend continued on the Bombay Stock Exchange for the third consecutive day following good buying support from foreign institutional investors and speculators. The BSE sensex surged ahead by about 65 points.

Reflecting the trend, the sensitive index opened at 4204.83, touched the day's high of 4258, declined to the day's low of 4182.32, and closed at 4251.13, showing a net gain of 64.84 points over the previous close of 4186.29.

Similarly, the BSE-100 index moved up by 29.43 points to 1847.80 against the previous close of 1818.37. The BSE-200 and dollex indices closed higher by 6.44 and 3.01 points to 412.23 and 192.25 points against the previous close of 405.79 and 189.24 points respectively.

The marketmen said that the FIIs have made considerable purchases at the select counters like Tisco, Castrol, Larsen and Toubro, Colgate and some others.

Encouraged by the constant buying of FIISs, the speculators also have made good purchases in some attractive counters, leading BSE brokers said.

Welcoming to the recommendations presented by the Varma committee to the Securities and Exchange Board of India on the 'carry forward trading' in old formula, the brokers said that it will boost market sentiments at BSE if SEBI approves it immediately.

The total turnover on the BSE reported during the day was at Rs 9.4881 billion.

Reliance stood first in the list of turnover by registering highest turnover of Rs 2.8224 billion, followed by Tisco Rs 1.3227 million, State Bank of India Rs 1.2377 billion, ITC Rs 723.9 million and Castrol Rs 386.6 million.

Other actively traded scrips were Telco Rs 369.6 million, L&T Rs 272.7 million, MTNL Rs 220.1 million, Tata Tea Rs 180.3 million, ACC Rs 160.9 million, Colgate Rs 156.5 million, Reliance Capital Rs 104.4 million, Bajaj Auto Rs 98 million, Dr Reddy's Lab Rs 67.4 million and Mahindra and Mahindra Rs 57 million.

National Stock Exchange

The new settlement opened on an optimistic note on the National Stock Exchange on Wednesday following good buying support from foreign as well as domestic institutional investors.

Reflecting the trend, the NSE-50 index opened at 1184.05, touched the day's high of 1201.75, declined to the day's low of 1183.90, and later finished at 1200.70, showing a net gain of 27.45 points over the previous close of 173.25 points. The midcap index also registered a smart gain of 37.50 points to 1313.10 points over the previous close of 1275.60.

The total turnover on the NSE reported during the day was at Rs 17.6043 billion.

Reliance scrip topped the list of turnover by registering highest turnover of Rs 5.1593 billion, followed by ITC Rs 2.3071 billion, Tisco Rs 2.2895 billion, SBI Rs 2.2358 billion and Telco Rs 815 million.

Hectic activity was witnessed at the other counters like ACC Rs 778.1 million, Castrol Rs 542.6 million, L&T Rs 516.1 million, Tata Tea Rs 455.4 million, MTNL Rs 172.5 million, Colgate Rs 130.8 million, Bajaj Auto Rs 127.2 million, Reliance Capital Rs 122.5 million, Hindustan Lever Rs 80.7 million, Satyam Comp Rs 75 million, Bank of Baroda Rs 6 paid up Rs 71.2 million, Tata Chem Rs 70.3 million, Reliance Petro Rs 69.3 million, BSES Rs 67.9 million, HPCL Rs 55.6 million, Gujarat Ambuja Rs 53.4 million, Bank of India Rs 52.5 million, Bata Rs 44.5 million, Mahindra and Mahindra Rs 43.7 million and IPCL Rs 43.3 million.

The top NSE-50 gainers were Essar Steel, Rel Petro, Tata Chem, MRPL and Ponds India. The top five losers were ICICI, EIH, IDBI, Bajaj Auto and BSES.
