Sensex jumps up by 84 points

The Sensex recovered sharply by over 83.76 points crossing the psychological barrier of 4400 mark, due to the heavy buying support from the foreign institutional investors on the first day of the current settlement cycle at the Bombay Stock Exchange on Monday.

According to marketmen, the FIIs bought shares at select counters mainly Madras Refinery, Sterlite, Reliance, State Bank of India and ICICI. On the other hand, the FIIs were reported selling shares of TELCO and ITC.

Reflecting the uptrend, the BSE sensitive index opened at 4434.02 and touched a day's high of 4482.51 points, a day's low of 4423.69, and finally settled down at 4481.30, showing a net gain of 83.76 over the previous weeks close of 4,397.54.

The BSE 100 rose by 33.56 to 1947.58 points from the last close of 1,914.02. The BSE 200 closed at 433.05 and the dollex at 201.85 from the previous closes of 425.87 and 198.44 points respectively.

The total turnover on the BSE reported during the day was Rs 10.0174 billion. The total number of scrips traded were 2,222 from the listed 6,741.

Reliance topped the list in turnover by registering a highest turnover of Rs 3.1519 billion, followed by ITC Rs 1.6589 billion, SBI Rs 1.6246 billion, Tata Tea Rs 119.5, TELCO Rs 101.3 million and ACC Rs 217.8 million.

Hectic activity was also reported at counters like ICICI, Colgate, Castrol, Sterlite, Reliance Capital, Larsen and Toubro, Ranbaxy and Hind Lever.

Pivotal prices improved marginally despite lacklustre trading at the NSE on Monday.

Reflecting the better trend, the NSE-50 index opened at 1256.85, saw a day's high of 1260.00 and a low of 1247.65 before closing at 1258.35, showing a net gain of 1.40 points over the previous close of 1256.85.

Meanwhile, the midcap index dipped lower by 1.00 points to 1359.10 against the previous close of 1360.10 points. The total turnover on the NSE reported during the day was Rs 16.0957 billion.

ITC stood first in the list of turnover by registering a highest turnover of Rs 4.6071 billion, followed by Reliance Rs 3.7732 billion, SBI Rs 1.7784 billion, Tata Tea Rs 1.3364 billion, ACC Rs 811.5 million and TELCO Rs 668.9 million.

Hectic activity was observed at other counters like TISCO, ICICI, Castrol, Colgate, Rel Capital, Larsen and Toubro, Hind Lever, Bajaj Auto, Ranbaxy, BSES and Mahindra and Mahindra.

Among the top five NSE-50 gainers for the day were ICICI, Rel Capital, ABB, Bajaj Auto and Tata Tea, while the top losers for the day included Asian Paints, Cochin Refineries, EIH Limited, Hindalco and BSES.
