Kanchi swami underlines value-based banking for safer economyBanks should not only come forward to help in social service and rendering succour to the poor but influence their wealthy clients to do the same, advised JagadGuru Sankaracharya of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham, Sri Jayendra Saraswati Swami. Delivering his discourse on value-based banking in Bombay, the JagadGuru (jagad=universe; guru=master) said there was a crying need to stop the migration of the rural populace to urban areas. All efforts should be made to gainfully employ the rural folk in the place of their birth, he added. In this endeavour, banks could play a leading role as they had the wherewithal and the power of persuasion by which they could emerge as a crystallising agent in generating a better economic atmosphere. He listed some of the works of social service that the Peetham had introduced in different parts of the country for the benefit of the poor and the downtrodden. He appealed to everyone to donate generously to these works which were being executed under strict financial discipline. The Sankaracharya, without meaning to criticise anybody, said many of the Hindu religious organisations were placing emphasis on rituals than actual social service. Their priorities need to be corrected as works which help the poor directly, both materially and spiritually, should be taken up first, he added.
