Durga Puja: Kolkata's pandals

Durga puja is the most important festival for the people of West Bengal.

This festival is celebrated all over India, though with differing rituals.

In Bengal, it is the most awaited festival of the entire year and is celebrated over four days. It is believed that goddess Durga leaves her husband's residence in Kailash to visit her father Himalaya's home with her children Lakshmi, Saraswati, Ganesh and Kartik during this period.

In West Bengal, the most attractive part of the celebrations are the puja mandaps, which are brightly colored, gaily decorated and bursting at seams with devotees assembled to catch a glimpse of their favourite goddess.
