Veerappan puts three new demands

Forest brigand Veerappan has set three fresh demands for his surrender.

These are: a judicial inquiry into police atrocities in the tribal villages on the Tamil Nadu-Karnataka border, a Central Bureau of Investigation probe into his younger brother Arjunan's death and the release of 73 people detained in Karnataka on the charge of supporting him.

The demands were made in Veerappan's most recent interview to Nakkeeran editor R Gopal. The smuggler, in the videographed interview, said if the demands were met in 15 days, he would surrender the next day.

Gopal had met Veerappan in his jungle hideout last Friday, even as commandos of the Karnataka and Tamil Nadu special task forces roamed the forest searching for the poacher.

The editor told newspersons that he undertook the mission after Veerappan requested for a meeting (via an audio cassette, as usual) to discuss the terms of his surrender.
