UP council polls put off due to sops

Annoyed with the Uttar Pradesh government's decision to devolve huge funds to urban and local bodies, the Election Commission has postponed the state legislative council election from December 29 to January 11.

''It had come to our notice that, only a few days before the polls to the legislative council, the state government had announced largescale devolution of funds to urban and local bodies,'' said the Commission.
