A 13-month-old girl in London swallowed some crack cocaine that her father, a junkie, left lying around. The child was saved from death since the drug was wrapped in clingfilm.

Though Tahir Mohammed, 26, was told of the incident by his wife, Mihahnaz, 22, immediately, he did not call an ambulance for two hours to take his daughter to hospital. He claimed that he thought Mihahnaz was lying to him since she has been asking him to quit drugs.

Mohammed had left the cocaine on a coffee table in his house in Fir Vale, Sheffield. "The potential consequences could have been fatal," said prosecutor Philip Bingham.

Mohammed has been given a jail sentence of 18 months since he admitted to possessing a drug. The other counts are of wilful ill-treatment and neglect.

"He (Mohammed) does not deserve to be a parent. The sentence is too short," said Nikki Kerr, a social worker.

Mihahnaz has not been charged since it was proved that she is from an Indian village and speaks no English nor knows how to use the phone.
