Polls: 70% vote in Malvan; 35% in Mumbai NW

November 19, 2005 20:31 IST

An estimated 70% voters cast their ballots Saturday in the bypoll for the Malvan assembly constituency while 35% polling was recorded for the Mumbai north-west parliamentary bypoll, both in Maharashtra, the Election Commission announced in New Delhi Saturday.

State Revenue Minister and Congress candidate Narayan Rane is pitted against Shiv Sena nominee Parshuram Uparkar in Malvan while Priya Dutt of Congress is contesting against Madhukar Sarpotdar of Shiv Sena for Mumbai North-West Lok Sabha seat.

The Mumbai North-West Lok Sabha seat bypoll was necessitated due to the death of former Union minister Sunil Dutt.

An estimated 68.23% polling was recorded in Friday's Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha by-poll, where Congress party's V S Sivakumar and Communist Party of India's Pannyan Raveendran are locked in a battle six months ahead of Kerala assembly elections, Deputy Election Commissioner Anand Kumar told reporters in New Delhi.
