A protest by the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad activists against the terrorist attack in Ayodhya turned violent in Delhi on Wednesday as hundreds of demonstrators clashed with security personnel.

The protesters overturned police barricades near Jantar Mantar, the venue of the demonstration, just as BJP president L K Advani arrived to participate in the programme.

Police burst several tear gas shells, used water cannons and brought the situation under control. However, the activists continued to raise slogans against the attackers.

Several BJP leaders, including V K Malhotra, Sushma Swaraj, Madanlal Khurana, Harsh Vardhan and Jagdish Mukhi, besides scores of supporters, later courted arrest.
