Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh on Thursday said his government will continue with the slums demolition drive in Mumbai.

"Those slums on public land will be demolished...it's a high court directive," he said after meeting Congress president Sonia Gandhi to discuss the issue.

Over 90,000 slums occupying land belonging to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, the state government and the Airports Authority of India have been demolished in the metropolis in the past couple of months.

The drive has meet with stiff opposition from the ruling Congress-Nationalist Congress Party legislators.

Several Maharashtra MLAs and members of Parliament, including Bollywood star Govinda, have met Sonia and registered their opposition to the drive.

All India Congress Committee general secretary and in-charge of Maharashtra, Margaret Alva, had on Wednesday met with top state Congress leaders led by Mumbai Regional Congress Committee chief Gurudas Kamat.
