Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala on Saturday threatened to annul the Yamuna Water Accord if his Punjab counterpart, Amarinder Singh, does not restore his state's water sharing agreement with Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh and Haryana.
The Punjab Legislative Assembly passed the Punjab Termination of Agreement Bill 2004 by a unanimous vote on July 10, thus terminating its water sharing agreements with three neighbouring states.
The move had followed a Supreme Court directive to the Union government to take over the construction of the Satluj-Yamuna Link canal.
The SC had accused the Amarinder Singh government of willfully delaying the construction work of the link canal, which will carry the Satluj river's water to Haryana and Rajasthan.
Speaking to reporters in Gurgaon, Chautala said if Punjab does not reverse its decision, Haryana will be compelled to scrap the Yamuna accord, which could cause a serious water crunch in Delhi.
Chautala alleged that the Punjab chief minister could not have moved the Bill in the assembly without the consent of his party president Sonia Gandhi.
"Punjab is setting the wrong precedent. Anarchy will prevail in the country if every state followed in Punjab's foot steps," he warned.
