10 dead in Guwahati landslides G Vinayak in Guwahati | July 15, 2004 13:48 IST At least 10 people died in land and mudslides in Assam's capital Guwahati on Wednesday night following heavy rains in the city and its outskirts, Kamrup (Metropolitan) District Magistrate A K Absar Hazarika said.
Several kutcha houses have been buried under mudslides brought about by the incessant rains in Santipur, Fatasil Ambari and Pub Sarania localities. The Brahmaputra and its tributary, the Bharalu river, has inundated several low-lying areas in the city after overnight floods. The Brahmaputra, which was flowing more than 1.5 metres above the danger mark for the last four days, is threatening to breach the embankment that protects some of the low-lying areas in Guwahati. Several localities like Zoo Road, Silpukhuri, Chandmari, Fatasil Ambari, Fancy Bazar are under knee-deep water. The flood situation in other parts of the state is equally bad.
