…and Pakistan reciprocates

After Prime Minister A B Vajpayee offered a handshake of peace, Islamabad did not lag behind in pushing the peace agenda. On Eid, Pakistan offered a complete ceasefire along the Line of Control and the Siachen glacier, which India accepted.

After agreeing to most of India's confidence building measures -- including full resumption of cricketing and other sporting links, launching a bus service between Srinagar and Muzaffarabad in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, and increasing the frequency of the Delhi-Lahore bus service -- Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf hinted he was willing to reconsider Pakistan's long-standing demand for a plebiscite in Kashmir.

Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Jamali later denied the offer.
