The Bharatiya Janata Party on Friday rejected the opposition demand for Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's resignation in the wake of the Supreme Court passing strictures against his government in the Best Bakery case.

"There is no need for Modi to resign. The Gujarat government will take note of the observations made by the apex court and act accordingly," party chief M Venkaiah Naidu told reporters in New Delhi.
 
Asked whether the SC observations will prove embarrassing for the BJP in the forthcoming assembly elections in four states, he said: "There is no embarrassment at all. Supreme Court has made some observations and we will have to examine it. We don't make comments on observations made by the apex court."

He said the Supreme Court has not given any final direction and has only summoned the state's chief secretary and director general of police.

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh spokesman Ram Madhav said: "The SC verdict is only a comment on the Best Bakery case, the court has not said anything [against the Gujarat chief minister].
