A civil suit filed on behalf of the victims of the Bhopal gas tragedy, which killed thousands in 1984, has been dismissed by a Federal District Judge in New York.

The suit was filed against the Union Carbide Corporation Company and its then chief executive officer Warren Anderson against whom criminal proceedings are still pending in India.

The suit sought damages for the injuries suffered.

Dismissing the suit, Judge John F. Keenan recalled that the company had sold all its shares in the plant and used money to build a hospital in Bhopal.

"This contribution goes far to satisfy any further obligation the defendants have for the citizens of Bhopal," he said.

More than 4000 people were killed within hours of the gas leak from the Carbide's Bhopal plant and thousands of
others were handicapped in the aftermath.

It was not immediately known if the plaintiff would file an appeal.
