Jaya supports UCC, Ram temple in Ayodhya

July 29, 2003 18:25 IST

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Tuesday extended support for introduction of a Uniform Civil Code and also the construction of a Ram temple in Ayodhya.

"A Uniform Civil Code is very necessary for the country. The AIADMK would certainly support a legislation in Parliament in this regard," the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagham general secretary told reporters in Chennai.

Instead of adversely affecting the interests of minorities, she said, a UCC would ensure all citizens are treated equally.

The AIADMK leader also reiterated her support for the construction of a Ram temple in Ayodhya. "If we cannot build a temple for Lord Ram in India, where else can we do it?"

She parried a question on whether her party would extend support for a legislation to enable temple construction.

On the recent strike by state government employees, Jayalalithaa accused opposition parties of playing 'dirty' politics in the entire episode.

Earlier, scores of activists from the Congress, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagham and other parties joined the AIADMK in her presence at the party headquarters in Chennai.

She also solemnised the marriage of a party worker.
