Vajpayee was a sharp student from his childhood. His schooling was done in Gwalior, and he was known for having never missed a single class in his first division.

Later he joined the DAV College, Kanpur, where he completed his Master's in History and Political Science.

In an interview a few years ago to children on the occasion of International Children's Broadcast Day he playfully confessed to being a naughty kid whose ears were regularly twisted.

Vajpayee also said he was never a bookworm and was part of the school hockey team.
