DMK denies Jayalalithaa's charge on links with Veerappan

N Sathiya Moorty in Chennai

DMK general secretary K Anbazhagan on Saturday took exception to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa linking party president M Karunanidhi with Veerappan and to Nagappa's abduction.

In a statement on Friday night, Jayalalithaa had alleged the DMK chief's sudden trip to Goa on Friday had given rise to suspicion that he might later proceed to Bangalore to meet either brigand Veerappan or his emissary.

She claimed that Karunanidhi, along with former DMK minister Duraimurugan, originally planned to go directly to Bangalore, but had later changed their plans fearing it might raise suspicion.

"This is only an attempt to divert public attention from the various problems that the government is unable to solve," Anbazhagan said in a statement in Chennai on Saturday.

He pointed out that Karunanidhi was always accompanied by personnel of central and state security agencies.

Karunanidhi was in Goa only to complete some work on a book, Anbazhagan said adding, "We are ready to face a probe regarding the chief minister's charge."

Jayalalithaa on Friday claimed to have instructed the state police to enquire into the matter. "The truth will soon be out," she said.

She had claimed that Karunanidhi and Duraimurugan were in Bangalore in early August for five days. Former Karnataka minister H Nagappa was abducted only after their visit to Bangalore, she said.

"It should be noted that both Duraimurugan and Veerappan belong to the Vanniyar community," she said.
