Boat capsizes in Orissa, 40 feared dead

At least 40 people were feared drowned when a boat capsized in river Baitarani in Bhadrak district of Orissa on Saturday morning.

The boat, carrying nearly 70 people, capsized after it hit a mound in the river near Nahanga village, an official report said.

The body of an old woman had been recovered and three persons in serious condition had been rescued and hospitalised, it said.

The boat was on its way from Maninathpur Ghat in Bhadrak district to Devigada Ghat in Jajpur district.

Rescue operations were on to trace survivors. The government had requested the naval training school, INS Chilka, to help the district administration in rescue work.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced an ex-gratia of Rs 50,000 to the next of kin of the drowned. The government would bear medical expenses of those admitted to hospital, he said.
