Nagappa's wife appeals to Veerappan on radio

Fakir Chand in Bangalore

Parimala, the wife of the abducted former Karnataka minister H Nagappa, went on air on Tuesday appealing to Veerappan to release her husband.

The 3-minute recorded appeal to the forest brigand is being broadcast by the All India Radio in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu so that Veerappan could listen to them and have a 'change of heart' for freeing Nagappa from his hideout in the Sathyamanagalam forest range.

Through the broadcast Parimala tells Veerappan in Kannada and Tamil that Nagappa has 'high regard' for him and that he (Nagappa) bears no 'ill-will' against him or any 'intentions to harm him'.

"Whatever demands you have, please sort it out with the state governments, but kindly spare us from the agony by releasing Nagappa immediately. As he is old (at 62) and needs regular medical care, he will not be able to bear the strain of living in the forest for long. As your sister, I beg you for the life of my husband Nagappa," Parimala appealed.

In a separate message to her husband, Parimala tells him not to worry about them, but take care of his health, especially his daily dose of tablets. "We are all anxiously waiting for your quick return. Children are OK. We have been told by the state government to face the situation boldly and bear the crisis."

Parimala's appeal to Veerappan is a reminiscent of what Parvathamma, wife of Kannada matinee idol Dr Rajakumar, did two years ago, when he was abducted by Veerappan in a similar fashion from their ancestral farmhouse at Gajanur.

The fact that Veerappan had finally released Rajkumar after holding him hostage for 108 days has given hope to Parimala and other family members that the forest brigand would not harm Nagappa and free him eventually.

Meanwhile, Rajakumar appealed to millions of his fans and people in both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu to maintain peace and harmony. The Kannada celluloid icon said nothing 'untoward should be done or said that would precipitate matters further'.
