S M Krishna cancels US trip

Fakir Chand in Bangalore

Karnataka Chief Minister S M Krishna has cancelled his much-awaited trip to the US due to the latest crisis brewing in the state following the abduction of Janata Dal leader and former minister H Nagappa by brigand Veerappan on Sunday night.

This is the second time IT-savvy Krishna has had to cancel an official tour to the US. Last year, around the same time, he had to cancel his trip in the wake of severe drought in many parts of the state.

According to sources in the chief minister's office, Krishna decided to cancel the trip late on Monday night to personally coordinate the government's efforts to secure the safe release of Nagappa.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani, who is in Bangalore to inaugurate a two-day BJP meet, assured state Home Minister Mallikarjuna Kharge of the Centre's full support, including central forces, to help secure Nagappa's release.
