At least seven policemen were killed and four critically injured in a landmine blast set off by extremists of the banned People's War group of the Communist Party of India, Marxist-Leninist, near Gothalpadar village in Orissa's Raigada district at about 1030 IST on Sunday, police said.
The extremists had killed a man near the Andhra Pradesh border on Saturday night on suspicion of being a police informer.
A police team comprising senior officers of the district and a Central Reserve Police Force platoon was heading for the site when their vehicle ran over the mine, Inspector General of Police (operations) M M Praharaj said.
While five policemen died on the spot, two others died in the district head quarter of Raigada, he told rediff.com
The policemen killed were six CRPF jawans and one Orissa police havildar who was driving the van. Four others critically injured are undergoing treatment at the Raigada district hospital.
Police have launched special operations to nab the extremists.
