BJP expels 4 MLAs for proposing Dilip Ray's nomination

The Orissa unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party on Friday expelled four legislators who, among others, had proposed the nomination of independent candidate and expelled Biju Janata Dal leader Dilip Ray in the recent biennial elections to the Rajya Sabha.

State BJP president Manmohan Samal expelled Gaurahari Nayak, Bhanu Charan Nayak, Laxman Soren and Surendra Kanhar for their "grave anti-party" activities, a party press release said.

"By sponsoring the candidature of the independent candidate, the MLAs had lowered the image of the party," the release said.

Two other MLAs -- Padmacharan Haiburu and Purusottam Nayak -- who were associate members of the BJP in the assembly, were "de-associated" on the same charge.

They had also signed Ray's nomination papers.

Ray, a former Union minister, was re-elected to the Rajya Sabha ahead of the Congress nominee following cross-voting from all major parties.
