General strike marred by violence, Geelani arrested

Senior executive member of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference and fireband Jamaat-E-Islami leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani and ten other Hurriyat leaders were taken into preventive custody as the general strike called to protest the alleged burning of Holy Quran was marked by clashes at several places in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday.

The strike call, given by Geelani and supported by several religious and political parties, evoked near total response with educational institutions, shops and business establishments remaining closed throughout the valley, official sources said. Attendance in government offices was thin and all modes of transport remained off roads.

Geelani, who was placed under house arrest on Thursday evening, was taken into custody with seven other Hurriyat leaders when he broke the police cordon around his Hyderpora house in Srinagar and tried to lead a demonstration, a senior police officer said.

Police resorted to bursting of teargas shells and lathi-charge to disperse the demonstrators, including women and children.
