India lodges protest with Pakistan
over air space violation

India on Tuesday lodged a strong protest with Pakistan over Monday air space violation in the Chhamb sector of Jammu and Kashmir by two reconnaissance aircraft of that country even as New Delhi rejected as 'totally baseless' Islamabad's denial of such incursions.

The protest was conveyed by the sector commander of the Chhamb area to his Ranger counterpart in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir, defence sources in New Delhi said.

Rejecting as totally baseless Islamabad's claim that Pakistani planes had not violated Indian airspace, a foreign office spokesman said two aircraft had strayed across the Line of Control.

Indian troops had engaged the two aircraft by opening fire, possibly hit one of them, and forced them to withdraw. A search for any possible wreckage was on.

A protest is also expected to be lodged by the Indian High Commission in Islamabad and by the government with the Pakistani mission here.
