Spurious liquor claims six in Orissa

Imran Khan in Bhubaneswar

Six persons died after consuming spurious liquor in Puri in Orissa on Wednesday. Sources, however, said that the death toll was seven.

The victims included two women and a pilgrim from Uttar Pradesh, who had come to visit the Lord Jagannath temple.

Six other persons have also been admitted to the district hospital.

Of the six persons in hospital, three have lost their eyesight.

All were residents of Puri town.

The victims were admitted in a critical condition on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, hospital sources said.

Their condition deteriorated later in the day. Four persons died in hospital and two died on their way to Cuttack hospital.

Police investigations into the tragedy have begun and liquor trader Ramkrishna Patnaik was arrested on Wednesday evening.

The police have seized some bottles containing the spurious liquor and one bottle of acid.

The police suspect that Patnaik mixed the acid and the country liquor.
