Seven LeT militants killed in gunbattle in Jammu

Seven foreign mercenaries belonging to the Lashkar-e-Tayiba were killed and two Army personnel, including a captain, injured in a gunbattle in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir, a defence spokesman said in Jammu.

Acting on specific information about the presence of the militants in Samba tehsil, army troops cordoned off the area around 0530 hours and asked the militants to surrender.

But the militants opened indiscriminate fire on the troops, forcing them to retaliate triggering a fierce exchange of fire which left seven LeT ultras dead.

The gunbattle lasted for nine hours.

One army captain and a jawan were also injured in the encounter, the spokesman said.

Troops recovered eight AK rifles, five under-barrel grenade launchers, one Pika gun, three radio sets, besides ration and clothing, he said.

The identity of the slain militants, who are all foreigners, was yet to be established, he said, adding that the troops were searching the area to finds bodies of more militants.

In another incident, troops recovered 537 AK rounds, 17 electronic detonators and two IEDs from Makharia forest of Poonch district.
