Karnataka DGP doubts Nagappa's 'encounter' tale

Karnataka Director General of Police C Dinakar on Saturday disputed the claims of assistant film director Nagappa Maradagi that he staved off a challenge by one of bandit Veerappan's aides when he escaped from the clutches of the bandit.

Dinakar told reporters in Bangalore that a verification of the statements of Nagappa from authorities in Madras proved that they were untrue.

Nagappa had told the press that he had attacked an associate of Veerappan and some reports had even said that he had attacked the bandit while escaping.

He had also claimed that he trekked for more than ten hours to reach Bannhari before securing money from a person to meet travel expenses upto Gajanur.

Dinakar said certain information revealed by Nagappa on the movements of Veerappan and the gang's hideouts were 'not worth mentioning'.

The DGP said Nagappa was a free man, when asked whether the police have detained him. However, Nagappa had been provided security, he informed.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi had expressed surprise over the escape of Nagappa and journalist emissary R R Gopal had blamed the latter for the failure of his fourth mission.
