Policeman suspended, arrested for pissing on detainee

An assistant sub-inspector of police at Barpali in Bargarh district of Orissa was arrested and suspended on Monday for allegedly urinating on a detained person inside a police station seven months ago, official sources said.

The incident occurred on Holi day (March 21) inside the Bheden police station in the same district where ASI Dolagobinda Sahu was posted at the time, they said.

The victim had been brought to the police station in a drunken state for allegedly causing nuisance in a public place.

The matter came to the fore two days ago when a leading Oriya daily in Bhubaneswar, Dhariti, published a photograph on the front page showing the sub-inspector about to urinate into the cupped palms of the victim. Another policeman was seen in the frame watching the scene.

The photograph caused a furore in official circles, prompting the state government to place the officer under suspension and order his arrest. A case has been registered at Bheden police station in this connection.

The sources said the charge was prima facie correct. Even if it was a joke, as the police officer had argued, it was inexcusable. It was a serious misconduct and the officer would be punished, they said.
