Veerappan releases Rajakumar, finally

Fakir Chand in Bangalore

Kannada matinee idol Dr Rajakumar was released by forest brigand Veerappan and is reportedly resting in a guesthouse on the fringes of the Satyamangalam forests. Dr Rajakumar was released in the early hours of Wednesday along with his associate Nagesh.

The duo were reportedly let off by forest brigand Veerappan at the behest of Tamil National Movement chief Pazha Nedumaran and his two accomplices.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi said in Madras that Rajakumar and Nagesh have been released and are resting in a guesthouse in Dimban, Erode district in Tamil Nadu. The chief minister added that all amenities are being provided to the Kannada film star.

Kannada actor Ambeerish told rediff.com in Bangalore that Annavuru (a respectful term for Rajakumar) had been released and had come out of the forest.

"Yes, Rajakumar has been released for sure this time. You can make out from my face. I have finally shaved my beard today as per my vow that I would do so only after Annavuru is freed by the bandit," a beaming Ambeerish said

Karnataka law minister Chandre Gowda said that Chief Minister S M Krishna would make a statement later in the legislative assembly on the release of the actor. "Wait for his statement. Don't be in a hurry," he said when asked what the chief minister would say.

Rajakumar's wife Parvathamma and sons Shiv Rajakumar, Raghavendra, and Puneet have reportedly left for Erode in the early hours of the day, along with Govindraj, Rajakumar's son-in-law, who Veerappan released last month.

Sa Ra Govindu, president of the Rajakumar Fans' Association, also confirmed to rediff.com on phone that Annavuru had been released and that his family is traveling to Erode to meet him.

Bangaloreans woke up on a wintry Wednesday morning to rumours about the imminent release of Rajakumar, and as the word spread there was a sigh of relief all around.

The city police have made elaborate security arrangements to prevent any untoward incidents even as prohibitory orders banning unlawful assemblies were issued in the city.
