Akash missile testfired successfully

E-Mail this report to a friend

The indigenously built multi-target surface-to-air missile Akash was successfully testfired from the Interim Test Range at Chandipur-on-sea near Balasore today.

According to ITR sources, all data concerning various parameters of the test obtained from telemetry centres and tracking radars were being analysed.

The 650 kg sleek missile was fired from a missile launcher at around 1130 hours.

With a range of 25 km, Akash could deliver 55 kg of conventional and nuclear explosives, the sources said.

The missile, which uses the integrated two-stage Ramjet propulsion technology, has the capacity to strike several targets simultaneously.

Compared with the United States' Patriot missile, Akash is a part of India's guided missile development programme started since 1983. A team of scientists of the Defence Research and Development Organisation were present during the launch of the missile.
