E-Mail this report to a friend

Four militants and a Special Police Officer were killed and two security personnel injured in a fierce clash at a village in Lolab valley in north Kashmir on Saturday while elsewhere in the valley one more militant and a woman were killed since Friday evening.

A report from Baramulla said security forces, on a tip off, cordoned off some villages in Lolab valley early on Saturday morning. When they were conducting house-to-house searches, militants hiding in some houses fired upon them with automatic weapons.

The security personnel retaliated and in the shootout, which was still going on when reports last came in, four militants were killed. One SPO also lost his life and two jawans received injuries.

Security forces cordoned off a vast area, including Sangrama, Lalad, Amargrah and Puthkha in Baramulla district following information that some militants were hiding there. Some persons were reportedly taken into custody during the house-to-house searches and identification parades.

Elsewhere, security forces killed a militant at Kulgam during a search operation on Friday evening while unidentified gunmen shot dead a woman at Aloosa Bandipora early on Saturday morning.

In another major encounter, a special operations group of the Jammu and Kashmir police gunned down three unidentified militants at Ratbug in Badgam district, a police spokesman said. A large quantity of arms and ammunition, including three AK assault rifles, a wireless set, three grenade launchers and five grenades were recovered from the slain ultras.

The spokesman said the Border Security Force shot dead a Hizbul Mujahideen militant, Nazir Ahmad Wagay alias Janbaaz in an encounter at Katchu-Ashmuji in Anantnag district. Some arms and ammunition were recovered from him.
