Pahalgam probe commission commences work

E-Mail this report to a friend

The three-member commission, constituted to probe the Pahalgam massacre in which 36 persons were shot dead by militants on August eight, on Sunday started functioning by holding discussions with Border Security Force, Central Reserve Police Force and Jammu and Kashmir police officials as well as civilian officers in the state.

The committee, headed by security advisor to the state government and corp commander Lt Gen J R Mukherjee also held discussions with representatives of traders, an official spokesman said in Srinagar.

The commission has appealed to eye-witnesses and other people having any knowledge on the incident to send in writing or personally hand over their statements to it by August 18.

Principal secretary (home) C Phunsog and Anantnag district magistrate G A Peer are the other two members of the commission.

The terms of reference of the commission include detecting any security lapse or dereliction of duty on the part of any government functionary, which made the militant attack feasible. If it was so, whether responsibility could be fixed and apportioned among the concerned persons and whether the magnitude of casualty could have been constrained after the initial burst of firing on the camp dwellers.
