Hizb attacks army camp in KashmirHours after the Hizbul Mujahideen withdrew its ceasefire, the divisional headquarters of the army at Baramulla in north Kashmir was targeted by militants believed to be members of the pro-Pakistan group. Elsewhere in the state, four militants, including three foreigners, were killed in separate encounters. Official sources said militants fired about five rifle grenades and some rockets at the headquarters in quick succession and followed up with artillery fire at around 1930 IST on Tuesday - barely two hours after Hizb leaders withdrew the ceasefire. The troops retaliated and the ensuing shootout lasted over an hour. There were no casualties. A defence ministry spokesman said three militants, two of them belonging to the Lashkar-e-Tayiba, were killed in two separate encounters at Rajwar-Handwara and Krusan-Lolab in the frontier district of Kupwara on Wednesday. The encounters started Tuesday evening and lasted the night, the spokesman said. Some arms and ammunition were also recovered. Troops also gunned down a Pakistani militant in an operation at Safapora in Baramulla on Tuesday. The militant belonged to the Jaish-e-Mohammad outfit. A Kalashnikov assault rifle was recovered from him. A major tragedy was averted with the timely detection of an improvised explosive device weighing ten kilos at Wavoora village in Kupwara on Tuesday evening. The device, hidden in a pressure cooker, was detected following specific information provided by a villager. UNI |
