E-Mail this report to a friend

Emissary R R Gopal, deputed by Tamil Nadu and Karnataka governments to negotiate the release of Kannada film star Rajakumar and three others in sandalwood smuggler Veerappan's captivity, was yet to establish contact with the brigand, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi said today.

Talking to reporters in Madras, Karunanidhi said, "He (Gopal) is yet to meet Veerappan."

However, he said he received two cassettes late last night in which Veerappan had laid certain conditions, but refused to disclose the contents saying he would divulge them after meeting his Karnataka counterpart S M Krishna tomorrow.

One of the cassettes was taken to Bangalore by an IPS officer K R Srinivasan, deputed by the Karnataka government to co-ordinate with Tamil Nadu in securing the release of the hostages, for being handed over to Krishna, he said.
