Editor Gopal sets off to meet Veerappan

R R Gopal, editor of the Tamil magazine Nakkeeran, has left, to meet sandalwood smuggler Veerappan, according to Karnataka chief minister S M Krishna's office.

Gopal is trying to secure the release of Kannada film icon Dr Rajakumar, who was kidnapped on Sunday night.

The office said in a statement that Gopal left for the jungles on Tuesday evening, after visiting Perambadur, where a reporter from his magazine was hacked to death by some people.

Gopal had left Madras early on Tuesday, to visit the Perambalur residence of his reporters, Selvaraj.

Earlier, his plan was to meet Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi on Tuesday evening, before departing to meet Veerappan.

Gopal's route is a secret and there is no word on how long his mission will take.
