Hold talks, US tells India, Pak again

The Bill Clinton administration wants India and Pakistan to enter into a dialogue and work out an arrangement to defuse the Kargil conflict.

''We certainly would want them not to take steps to expand the conflict beyond the current Kargil area. Beyond that, I don't think it's appropriate for me to say anything,'' state department spokesman James Rubin said yesterday.

In reply to a question, he confirmed that Secretary of State Madeleine Albright did telephone Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharief and Indian External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh on Saturday.

''The message was that we wanted to share our views with them on the current situation. We wanted to express our concern about the developments,'' he added.
