Clinton writes to Vajpayee on Kargil

E-Mail this report to a friend

In what is considered a significant development by diplomatic circles, United States President Bill Clinton has sent a letter to Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on the developments in Kargil.

In his letter, Clinton has informed Vajpayee that he had also written to Pakistani Premier Nawaz Sharief, calling upon Islamabad to take immediate steps to defuse the crisis in Kargil and respect the Line of Control.

Disclosing this in New Delhi today, an external affairs ministry spokesman declined to give more details of the letter. "I have nothing more to say on the privileged communication between the head of a state and the head of a government."

He said the letter obviously reflects the worldwide condemnation of the Pakistan-supported intrusion in Kargil. He said it was indicative of concern for and recognition of the fact that the problem was started by Pakistan.
