Moopanar quits as TMC president

In a dramatic move, Tamil Maanila Congress president G K Moopanar today announced his decision to resign from the post owning moral responsibility for the party's poor showing in the general election.

Talking to newspersons at the party headquarters, Sathyamoorthy Bhavan in Madras, he said he would submit his resignation to the TMC executive at the party's annual conference at Thanjavur on April 2.

Moopanar said the resignations of the entire executive submitted to him earlier as also of other office-bearers would be discussed by the executive at the conference.

The office-bearers had resigned en masse to enable Moopanar to reconstitute it following the defeat of 17 of the 20 TMC candidates in the election.

Moopanar said it was for the executive to elect a new president.

Asked about the stand of the National Conference and the Telugu Desam Party during the confidence motion moved by Prime Minister A B Vajpayee, Moopanar said it was for the United Front core committee to examine the political compulsions which made the constituents take a different stand.

On the possibility of the TMC returning to the Congress fold, Moopanar said there was a lot of confusion over the matter. However, it was for the Congress leadership to decide on the issue and then we will decide, he added.

Asked about the possibility of a political polarisation in the state he said there was no need for it now.
