Joshi says Bihar is like Om Puri's face, draws protests

Union Human Resource Development Minister Murli Manohar Joshi attracted protests from several members when he compared Bihar with the face of actor Om Puri.

Dr Joshi, who was speaking after Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Laloo Prasad Yadav in the Lok Sabha on the confidence motion, said, ''The former chief minister promised to change the face of Bihar as that of the cheeks of Hema Malini, but it actually looked like the cheeks of Om Puri.''

Janata Dal member S Jaipal Reddy wanted the chair to expunge the reference to Om Puri.

Dr Joshi said the BJP had no hidden agenda, as alleged by the Congress leaders. The government had only one agenda and it was the national agenda adopted by the BJP and its allies, he said.

He said the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government would provide a new form of governance and it would be done through national consensus. He said the confidence of the House was being sought to implement its national agenda.

Elaborating the BJP's concept of swadeshi, Dr Joshi said it meant that India would be built under Vajpayee's leadership.

There were loud protests from the Congress members when Joshi referred to the election of a non-member as the leader of a parliamentary party.
