Hegde defends BJP's move to amend Constitution
Union Commerce Minister Ramakrishna Hegde today
defended the government's resolve to review the Constitution in the light of the changing times.
Participating in the debate on the motion of confidence in the
council of ministers moved by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, he pointed out that the Constitution is sacred but not sacrosanct.
Hegde said changes in the Constitution were a necessity to
tackle new political challenges. He did not agree with P Shiv Shankar, the Congress deputy leader in the Lok Sabha, who said even the previous amendments could have been avoided.
The commerce minister said the government was not aiming to alter the Constitution, but only asking the best heads in the country to have a critical look at it.
Hegde blamed the Congress for forcing the latest election on the nation. He wondered what was wrong with the H D Deve Gowda and Inder Kumar Gujral governments that the Congress
pulled them down.
