Piqued Akali MP turns in assembly membership

Veteran Akali Dal-Badal leader Prem Singh Lalpura, who was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Tarn Taran constituency, has finally decided to take oath as member of the Lower House of Parliament tomorrow.

Lalpura, who is also a member of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha, handed over his resignation from the state assembly to Animal Husbandry Minister Rattan Singh, who will in turn forward it to the secretary of the assembly tomorrow, Manjinder Singh Kang, chairman of the state forest corporation, disclosed in Amritsar today.

It was after a great deal of persuasion by Rattan Singh and Kang that Lalpura decided to quit the state assembly. Both these Akali leaders had been in touch with Lalpura since last night, and they "achieved success" in their mission late this afternoon.

Lalpura, one of the senior-most Akali leaders, had been annoyed at being denied a ministerial berth in the Union council of ministers.

He will leave for New Delhi tonight to take oath as Lok Sabha member, and then take part in the Speaker's election as well as the vote of confidence to decide the fate of the Vaypayee government.
