ELECTIONS '96

3 elected unopposed to RS from Kerala

A Vijayaraghavan, Vakkachan Mattathil and Korambayil Ahmed Haji have been elected unopposed to the three vacant Rajya Sabha seats from the Kerala assembly.

As there were only three candidates, Legislature Secretary Rajendra Babu declared all of them elected on Friday, the last day for withdrawal of nominations.

The election was originally scheduled for March 27.

While Vijayaraghavan (Communist Party of India-Marxist) and Mattathil (Kerala Congress-Joseph) belong to the ruling Marxist-led Left Democratic Front, Korambayil Ahmed Haji (Indian Union Muslim League) is from the Congress-led United Democratic Front.

The three seats were vacated by Thennala Balakrishna Pillai (Congress), B V Abdullah Koya (IUML) and M A Baby (CPI-M).
