Sonia sets off scenes in Rajasthan assembly

Unruly scenes were witnessed in the Rajasthan legislative assembly today for about half an hour, over the issue of Sonia Gandhi taking over as the Congress president.

The trouble began when some members from the treasury benches, during a debate on vote of thanks to the governor's address, criticised the Congress for electing Sonia Gandh as the party president, and described her as a foreigner. This evoked strong protests from Congress members who in turn described the Bharatiya Janata Party president Lal Krishna Advani as a "foreigner'' since he hails from Sind, and prime minister-designate Atal Bihari Vajpayee as a leader who had sought pardon from the British during the national movement. This led to uproarious scenes for about half an hour.

The Congress members got agitated over a remark made by Tara Bhandhari (BJP) who was presiding over the proceedings of the house. Order was restored when deputy speaker Samarath Lal Meena announced that no remark should be made about those who were not members of the house.
