Nominations hit 18-year low in Rajasthan

A record low of 291 people have filed their nominations for the February 16 general election for 25 seats in Rajasthan, showing a sharp decrease compared to the all-time high figure of 1,059 in the 1996 election.

Election office data revealed that the number of people contesting the 12th Lok Sabha election in the state is at an all-time low since 1980.

In the 1991 general election, a total of 808 contestants filed their nominations while the corresponding figure in 1989 was 548.

In the 1984 Lok Sabha poll, the number of nominations was 582, a bit higher than the corresponding figure in 1989.

The number of nominations filed in the state was 440 in 1980, 217 in 1975, 234 in 1971, 170 in 1967, 184 in 1962, 142 in 1957 and 147 in 1952.
