CPI-M, JD to fight each other in Tripura

The Communist Party of India-Marxist and the Janata Dal will field candidates against each other for assembly seats in Tripura, but will jointly fight the coming election at the national level.

The ruling CPI-M had earlier allotted one seat for the JD. But the latter sought more seats and have now decided to field candidates in five of the 60 assembly seats.

JD state president Arun Bhowmik, who won the Barjala assembly seat in 1993 with CPI-M support, however, said his party would not contest the two Lok Sabha seats in the state.

Meanwhile, the CPI-M has announced state Social Welfare Board chairperson Chaya Bal for the Barjala seat. Altogether, the party has nominated five women candidates.
