Jagdish Awasthi, an Independent who won the first election from here in 1957, won the 1984 election for the Congress, 24 years later. In 1989, the constituency went to the JD, and elected Arun Nehru. In 1991 it went the BJP way, and in 1996 Shyam Behari Mishra retained the seat defeating the BSP's Rajaram Pal by 33,000 votes.
