Security beefed up in Bombay on poll-eve

Security has been beefed up across Bombay and an alert has been sounded, following the serial bomb blasts at Coimbatore last week.

Police Commissioner R H Mendonca said the city police intends to continue nakabandi and intense combing and search operations to filter out the criminals who may try to disrupt the law and order in the state during the Lok Sabha poll.

Intelligence reports have cautioned the state election authorities against the possible intervention of foreign hands to disrupt the election process in Maharashtra.

Seconding this, Maharashtra Chief Secretary P Subramaniam said the election and police machinery was on alert and all steps had been taken to ensure that the election was concluded without any untoward incident whatsoever.

The chief secretary said election preparedness in most constituencies in the state had been reviewed and was found to be satisfactory.

Subramaniam said appropriate security measures have been planned for top political leaders who would undertake election campaigning in the state. He denied that any politician had been requested to refrain from campaigning, saying that this would be an infringement of the democratic rights of the candidate.

The state, he said, will have to bear an expenditure to the tune of Rs 800 million for the Lok Sabha election.
