Coca-Cola's 'super pure' water, Dasani, sold in the United Kingdom, comes from the tap, says The Mirror.

The cola major confirmed that the source for the drink, costing 95 pence for half a litre, is the water mains supply to its factory, said The Mirror.

Cola bosses claimed that although it is tap water it undergoes special filtering to remove impurities. A spokesman has said that the tap water has already passed 99.92 per cent of quality tests, said newspaper reports.

They said sophisticated purification meant the product is 'as pure as water can get.' But suppliers group UK Water said: "People don't need to buy this stuff to get excellent quality healthy water. Tap water is pure," The Mirror reported.

The National Consumer Council likened the revelation to an episode of Only Fools and Horses in which Delboy sells tap water called Peckham Spring, said the British newspaper.

Coca-Cola is investing £7million in the UK launch of Dasani. It is the second biggest seller in the United States.

The firm says the water is filtered three times before being 'purified' and having calcium, magnesium and sodium bicarbonate added.

Bottled water sales rose by 16 per cent last year to £1.2 billion in the UK. More than two billion litres were drunk, consultants Zenith International revealed.
